Any journey starts with a small step. The seeds for the university journal were sown during an academic meeting of Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences Digital Library in July 2011 by the honorable Vice Chancellor Dr. I. V. Rao who wanted to start a peer reviewed journal to promote research activity among the faculty. The task of starting the journal was entrusted to Dr. K. A. Seetharam, Head, Academic Committee, Digital Library, Dr. B. V. Ramanareddy and me. Great care was taken for selection of the name for the journal and the publisher and in forming the editorial and advisory boards. We had generous support and encouragement all along from the then Honorable Vice-Chancellor Dr. I. V. Rao, Rector, Dr. M. V. Ramanamma, and Registrar, Dr. T. Venugopalrlao during the initial days and it was really a great moment for all of us when the first issue of "Journal of Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (JDRNTRUHS)" was released in March 2012.

 Gaining Momentum

Selection of Medknow Publications and Media Pvt., Ltd. turned out to be a key step as it provided us the electronic online manuscript submission and peer review process. It is a matter of pride that articles are now coming not only from the university faculty, but also from other authors from India and abroad. Eight issues of the journal have been published so far and it required a painstaking effort to see that each issue was ready in time after a scrupulous and meticulous peer review. In order to obtain better exposure of the authors and articles published in JDRNTRUHS, the journal has been indexed in several electronic data bases. The reputation of the journal is enhanced by the fact that the articles published in our journal are cited by other authors. Medical Council of India (MCI) has been requested to accept the articles published in this journal by postgraduates and faculty members for their examinations and promotions respectively. National Library of Medicine has also been approached for indexing the journal in Medline/PubMed.

 Taking Over

Dr. K. A. Seetharam led the editorial team superbly and laid the foundation with firm footing during his successful tenure of 2 years as Editor-in-Chief and gradually built up the reputation of the journal with his dedication and commitment. I am grateful Dr. I. V. Rao, Honorable Vice-Chancellor of JDRNTRUHS, who had trust in my ability and gave me the opportunity to serve as the new Editor-in-Chief of JDRNTRUHS. It is no doubt loaded with a heavy responsibility but the fact that I worked as Associate Editor during the formative stage of the journal gives me courage and confidence to continue the excellent work initiated under the stewardship of Dr. Seetharam.

 Looking Ahead

There is mettle and material aplenty among our medical fraternity. But the real challenge is to channelize the efforts in the right direction and present the same in proper form and forum. A lot of excellent work is being done in our institutions but most of it goes unrecorded due to the simple reason that proper attention is not paid to publish the work. My goal is to make the journal a benchmark for medical research in South India by attracting original articles from our faculty so that our experiences in diagnostics and therapeutics are shared globally for a dispassionate evaluation. I will try my best to live up to the expectations. Never the less cooperation from all quarters is essential in our endeavor to further enhance the reputation of the journal and improve the impact factor. I am sure that that with guidance from the university authorities and the advisory board members and coordination of the editorial team, and support from reviewers and authors our journal is bound for a bright future.
